Get your spring on and embrace the new life

September 5, 2018 BY

Spring is in the air!

Aaaaaah, welcome, spring, you lovely thing!

Blossoms are blooming on the fruit trees, the birds are out and about, herbs flourishing, lawns growing and the sun is starting to slice through the crisp winter air.

Winter is a time of retreat, warmth, comfort, darkness and nourishing our cold bodies.

I love winter!

Soups, stews, chai simmering on the stove and early nights by the fire are what embodies winter for me.

Spring is about growth. Peeling back the winter layers to shine new light on the old body!

A time to switch the warm tea to cleansing juices.

Start reintroducing some raw foods and salads back onto your plate. Moving your body again at a higher intensity. Spring cleaning!

We have mostly lost touch with living seasonally as a society.

We have electricity, heaters, air conditioners.

We have food in abundance all year round. Fruits and veg that would normally be scarce in the winter months are flown in from overseas.

We have supermarkets on our doorsteps, cars to drive to our every whim.

We have no need to preserve fresh produce, to cure meats. But have we lost that special connection with nature in favour of convenience? I’ll let you think about that one.

This makes me sad. I like to feel the changes in season. To eat as seasonally as I can. I say bring back the art of preserving and fermenting. Eating within our means both seasonally and financially. Buy or grow the best produce you can. Nourish your soil. Literally and metaphorically.

Get your spring on and embrace the new life! And don’t forget to get those hands in your garden.
