Good Beer Week to hit Ocean Grove

Kay Godfrey and Chilla Tuicolo are behind BrewiColo Brewing Co.

Sipping on a beer brewed close to home is one of life’s simple pleasures.

Whether you’re a beer lover from the coast or the city, Ocean Grove brewery BrewiColo is inviting avid beer drinkers to join in on its first Good Beer Week celebration.

Hosting a carpark handball competition on Saturday May 11, BrewiColo is encouraging beer enthusiasts to come along and check out the venue in a fun and inclusive environment.

“We are really looking forward to holding the event at the brewery,” BrewiColo’s Kay Godfrey said.

“The event is about getting the local community involved and promoting great beer at the same time.”

BrewiColo started about two years ago and opened its brewery site in Ocean Grove last year.

Kay’s husband, Chilla, has a Fijian background and works as the brewer.

“With his (Chilla’s) Fijian background comes the relaxed, chilled vibe the brewery and the brand represents,” Kay said.

“The name BrewiColo stems from Chilla’s surname, Tuicolo, and most of our beers have Fijian names including the Baravi Lager (baravi meaning coast), Wai- Koula (meaning golden water) and Piqi (meaning pink), which is pink in colour.

“A new Kofe (meaning coffee) Brown Ale has just been brewed for the Great Australia Beer Spectacular this month
using coffee extract from roasters Hello Coffee in Apollo Bay.”

Kay and Chilla say supporting local businesses and creating interactive community events is important to the success of the brewery.

“We aim to support local businesses and community involvement as much as possible. This includes sourcing ingredients for our speciality beers locally,” the pair said.

To create BrewiColo’s Piqi beer, hibiscus tea leaves are sourced from South Geelong’s LOVE TEA while honey from Bellarine Apiaries in Point Lonsdale is used for sweetness.

“Our spent grain is collected by local farmers looking after cattle from droughtstricken farms in New South Wales and we also engaged our local Men’s Shed Association to make our beer tasting paddles for the brewery,” Kay said.

A series of round-robin games on Saturday May 11 will see the top four battle it out for the champion title. Players entry includes three beers. Dressing up is highly encouraged.
