Grow it, Eat it in Geelong

October 18, 2018 BY

For green thumbs, and fresh produce lovers like Jeff Butler and son Jaylee (pictured at Grovedale Community Orchard) a series of free workshops and events is kicking off in Geelong on October 20.

A series of free workshops and events will take place in Geelong across October and November to celebrate local food produced and consumed by the community.

The Grow it, Eat it program starts on October 20 and includes cooking classes, food growing workshops, talks and films provided via Transition South Barwon (TSB) and funding obtained through City of Greater Geelong’s Community Grants Program.

Jess Boccia from TSB said they hoped to “engage, inspire and connect patrons” with local food and the community.

On October 20 you can join Anita from Diggers Vegie Kitchen at the Grovedale Neighbourhood House to cook a three-course plant-based meal showcasing fresh garden produce.

Participants will need to bring something they have grown to contribute to the cooking, a sharp knife and chopping board; everything else will be supplied.

For more information and to book go to trybooking.com/407744.

On October 27 the RetroSuburbia: A place to grow and thrive event will explore permaculture co-originator David Holmgren’s exciting new book, RetroSuburbia: the downshifter’s guide to a resilient future.

A bold manifesto that challenges many conventions, as well as a manual on how to live this change; Holmgren will explore the permaculture concepts and practical ideas within the book for applying retrofits to our homes, gardens and, most fundamentally, our behaviours.

Other key events include a Grow it, Swap it food swap where the community can bring along their homegrown and homemade produce to swap; a Resilient Food Futures House Tour of two local households showcasing localised and community food systems, and a Get Growing afternoon of tours, talks and gardening demonstrations.
