Lorne students score social zones

February 26, 2016 BY

LORNE-Aireys Inlet P-12 College will provide improved support to students with special needs thanks to a $35,000 grant, announced this week.

The grant comes via the state government’s Inclusive Schools Fund and will be used to create new passive seating areas at the school’s Lorne campus, allowing students to engage socially in a welcoming environment. Lorne campus Principal Karen Biggelaar said to provide zones for students with special needs with a place to relax and interact with their peers.

“It will give them a quiet space where they can have conversations and spend time with their friends and other students, away from all the running around.

“A number of our special needs students need quieter and calmer spaces, so this grant will help us to address those needs and tailor their learning environment.”

The Inclusive Schools Fund – as part of the Special Needs Plan – is providing $10 million over four years to build inclusive school facilities and help government schools better support the social and educational needs of young people with a disability.

Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said further grants from the Inclusive Schools Fund will be available later this year.

“I want to congratulate Lorne-Aireys Inlet P-12 College for its excellent initiative to support students with disabilities and special needs.

“The Special Needs Plan is helping us achieve our vision by giving students with disabilities the same chances as other students.”

“To become the ‘Education State’ we need to ensure equity for all – where Victoria’s success in education doesn’t depend on a child’s they live.”
