Influential English punk band Buzzcocks are headed to Australia for the first time since 2016 and will make a stop in Lorne over the Melbourne Cup weekend.

The band is considered by many to be one of the most important punk bands to come out of the genre’s first wave, becoming a definitive voice in the British Punk music scene and laying a foundation for influence that can still be felt today.

First established in 1976 by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto, the Buzzcocks found early commercial success, opening for the Sex Pistols in Manchester that same year.

Devoto departed the band in 1977 after the release of its debut EP, and following the death of Pete Shelley in 2018, longtime guitarist Steve Diggle shifted to the Buzzcocks’ front man and vocalist.

Now armed with a setlist of seminal hits including “What Do I Get” and “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t Have Fallen in Love With)”, the band will perform at the Lorne Theatre in Mountjoy Parade on November 3.

The Lorne Theatre also has 30 VIP tickets available, which include a meet and greet and photo with the band, along with priority venue access and a signed tour poster.

Lorne Theatre continues to forge a name for itself on the cultural scene, drawing big names and large talents from across the globe.

The Lorne Theatre is quickly making a name for itself on the cultural scene, housing performances by celebrated bands Minami Deutsch (pictured) and Calexico already this year.

The Buzzcocks’ gig marks the latest international act to visit the town, following performances at the Lorne Theatre by Japanese kraut-rockers Minami Deutsch and Arizona-based indie rock band Calexico earlier this year.

A spokesperson for David Roy Entertainment, the Buzzcocks’ tour operator, said the company was excited to “be a part of the Lorne Theatre’s resurgence”.

“At a time when venues are closing their doors, seeing a beautiful place like Lorne Theatre being given a second life as a music venue is incredibly exciting.

“A regional theatre, in such an iconic location, is not just going to benefit the local community but all the artists that get to come through and play in these new and diverse regions.

“After a difficult few years, it will be great to see all of the exciting shows and events that the Theatre will bring to Great Ocean Road.”
