Run to the horizon in race of sea and sun

February 1, 2018 BY

The stunning Flying Brick Bellarine Sunset run is being held on Saturday evening, with runners and walkers of all ages encouraged to participate in the local event.

Half-marathon runners will be challenged to outrun the tall ship Enterprize and its crew of pirates over 21.8 kilometres.

Starting with a shot from the Enterprize cannon as it leaves Portarlington pier, the ship will sail her way along the foreshore and race runners through Indented Head to St Leonards.

The Enterprise will turn at St Leonards, providing runners with an advantage as the ship is required to take a wider berth.

Last year’s half marathon winner Torquay’s Loretta McGrath is looking forward to racing again this year and securing her third win, while encouraging other locals to give it a go.

“The atmosphere is always fantastic and it’s great to get the support of everyone on holidays in the caravan parks along the foreshore – although cold beverages being consumed are always tempting,” she said.

“This will be my third time running. The scenery is stunning and I can’t wait to race the ship!

“I really enjoy running distance events in our region – especially enjoying the differing terrain, but the Bellarine Sunset run is always a highlight on my calendar now.”

The Port Phillip Ferries 10-kilometre race is one of two shorter distances on offer, with participants transited to St Leonards, racing back to Portarlington along the coastal trail.

Walk 4 Headspace presented by the Portarlington and Drysdale Community Bank is a four-kilometre walk starting behind the Port Pier Café raising awareness and funds for Bellarine Community Health Youth Services (BCH) with $20 from every $30 walk entry donated directly to BCH.

The Flying Brick Bellarine Sunset Run will not provide disposable cups on the course.

Competitors are to use their own hydration carrying vessels, or foldable cups will be available for purchase on the day for aid station filling.

With all distances accepting walkers and runners, the Flying Brick Bellarine Sunset Run has something for everyone.

Registration opens at 12pm, with races beginning at 4pm. To register and find out more, visit bellarinesunsetrun.com.
