Theatre win global award

Geelong’s Back to Back Theatre has been recognised for its creativity and dedication to the arts and awarded the prestigious Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale.

The multi-award-winning theatre company are known for their innovative productions and new forms of contemporary performance created by artists with disabilities.

Its shows aim to give a voice to social, political and economic issues which speak to all people.

Since its inception in 2009, Back to Back Theatre has delivered 86 national and 124 international seasons of its work.

It has also delivered community and education workshops to more than 34,000 participants, with a focus on artistic excellence and inclusive practise.

City of Greater Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said he was incredibly proud of the theatre’s “extraordinary achievements.”

“This is such a prestigious honour on the global stage.

“Their win elevates the profile of Geelong within the international arts community.”

The council’s creativity and cultural portfolio chair, Cr Melissa Cadwell, said Back to Back Theatre should be proud of its ability to captivate audiences with its groundbreaking productions.

“Their theatre embodies the spirit of creativity and innovation that defines our city, and we commend them for their remarkable accomplishments.

“The City of Greater Geelong stands firmly behind Back to Back Theatre, championing their ongoing success and contribution to the cultural landscape.

“We look forward to witnessing the continued impact of Back to Back Theatre as they inspire audiences and bring theatrical excellence to our region.”

Back to Back Theatre received a 2023-24 Community Grant from the city for MULTIPLE BAD THINGS, the theatre’s next major new work.

The world premiere of MULTIPLE BAD THINGS will be held at the Geelong Arts Centre in April before the performance heads to Melbourne and overseas to Brussels, Belgium.
