The Elite Women’s Race cyclists in this year’s instalment of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race were again officially welcomed to the region a few days earlier at the 2018 Welcome Wave. Hosted by the Surf Coast Shire, the event saw a Welcome to Country ceremony take place on the hill next to the Torquay SLSC clubhouse, before moving to dinner at the RACV Torquay Resort. The head of the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation, Dr Bridie O’Donnell, gave the keynote speech, and there were also Q&A sessions with event founder and Tour De France winner Cadel Evans alongside former pro rider Juan Antonio Flecha, as well as with Elite Women’s Race competitors Amanda Spratt and Shannon Malseed.
