Ammos claim Community Cup at race meeting
LOCAL spirit was on show at the Geelong Racing Club last weekend, with Geelong Amateur Football Club claiming the 2026 Community Cup during a highly successful Super Saturday.
The Ammos took home the $6,000 top prize after their allocated runner, Botanical Boy, won the final race of the day in front of a record-breaking crowd at the track.
A total of 24 clubs entered the Community Cup this year, each randomly assigned a horse and competing for a share of the $25,000 prize money pool donated by the Geelong Racing Club.
With strong participation numbers, the prize money was split across two races, with St Albans Football Club securing the $3,000 Consolation Cup after their horse Davida claimed victory earlier in the program.
In total, 14 of the 24 clubs received prize money, ranging from $500 through to the major $6,000 prize won by Geelong Ammos.
Ammos president Simon Farrell said the funding would provide a valuable boost for the club, particularly at junior level.
“We’ve now been involved for a couple of years and we’ve really enjoyed it,” he said of the event.
“We all need as much help as we can get. [It] doesn’t matter if you’re a local club or an AFL club, it all helps.
“[The prize money will help] our junior program out; it will allow us to put a couple of extra sides out on the ground.”
Farrell said while the prize money was a welcome bonus, the broader community aspect of the day was just as important.
“It’s just a really good, fun day for us to be involved in.
“We get all the volunteers there and everyone has a ball, so it’s good in a lot of regards.
“We really enjoyed the day and we think the race club do a fantastic job.”
