STRIKING original artworks will be the centrepiece of the new Armstrong Creek Library, with local artists encouraged to lend their talents to the project.

The City of Greater Geelong is planning to include an outdoor public artwork and a mural design for its ground floor of the library for the civic heart of the growing Geelong community.

The outdoor creation would be next to the library entrance to be viewed from all angles within the forecourt, while the mural will be printed on vinyl for display inside.

COGG is confident that adding the centrepiece will provide a point of interest for residents and visitors, and consolidate the city’s reputation as Australia’s only UNESCO City of Design.

“The library is going to become a focal point for the growing Armstrong Creek community so it’s really exciting to have public art incorporated into the design,” Geelong mayor Peter Murrihy said.

“Armstrong Creek is expected to reach a population of between 55,000 and 65,000 and the library will be a really important learning and cultural hub for the community.”

The city’s creative communities and culture chair, deputy mayor Trent Sullivan, said the contracts were as “exciting opportunity” for an artist or team to play their role in the creative vision for the new facility.

The city has budgeted $80,000 for the public art project, with submissions open until September 19.

Meanwhile, the internal mural artwork has $5,000 set aside, and is open until September 26.
