THE annual Surf Coast Century ultra-marathon is just around the corner and more than two dozen participants are using the event to raise crucial funds in the fight against family violence.

Geelong-born and Melbourne-based runner Anika Warren-Smith is one of 30 runners aiming to raise $5,000 to support women, men and children who have experienced family violence through family support service Bethany Community Support.

“Anyone can experience family violence. It is a widespread social problem that affects people from all walks of life regardless of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, or socio-economic status,” Ms Warren-Smith said.

Recent statistics indicate that one in three women have experienced emotional, physical or sexual abuse by an existing or former partner since the age of 15.

This year’s Surf Coast Century, being held on September 17, will be Ms Warren-Smith’s first ultra-marathon run.

Beginning her training regime with the “couch to 5km” program, Ms Warren-Smith has proven just about anyone can build up to participating in an ultra-marathon.

Ms Warren-Smith’s weekly training just under a month out from the event consists of a combination of four to five short and long runs, averaging around 50km a week.

She is also incorporating walks, yoga and Pilates in her training schedule.

“I believe we each have a role to play in keeping everyone in our community safe,” Ms Warren-Smith added.

“My small part in that is to challenge myself with a 50km trail run and fundraise to support people who are doing it tougher than I am.”

Through the partnership, runners have been making their steps count on and off the trail, fundraising for Bethany Community Support’s family violence programs and raising more than $1,600 to this point.

Entries are now open online, with further event information details at SurfCoastCentury.com.au.
