Cheer Cadel’s race as it rolls through Torquay

January 16, 2019 BY

SPECTATORS will gather at more than 30 Cheer Sites across the Surf Coast Shire to show their support for international riders in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (CEGORR).

The world-class cycling event returns to the region over the Australia Day weekend.

“We will have the world’s best riders competing here, and we need to give them a world-class welcome,” Cr Margot Smith said.

“This event always brings such wonderful atmosphere, and we would love to have big crowds again ringing their bells and cheering the riders on.

“If people are uncertain where to head to watch the race, they should seek out one of the registered Cheer Sites on Torquay’s Esplanade and Bell Street, the Great Ocean Road and at hinterland locations.

“They are great places to gather and show your support, and each site will have free bells available so people can ring the riders through.

Spectators are encouraged to wear Cadel’s signature aqua blue, or to add to the fun atmosphere by dressing in costume.

The 3,500-strong People’s Ride will pass through Torquay on January 26 from about 8am, followed by riders in the Elite Women’s Race between 1-2.30pm.

The UCI WorldTour Elite Men’s Race will pass through Torquay on January 27 between noon-1pm.

Cr Smith, a keen cyclist who will again be participating in the People’s Ride, encouraged visitors to make the most of the weekend of racing action.

“There is so much to do, whether it’s having a swim, doing some shopping or exploring our beautiful hinterland,” she said.

“Come for the race and stay for the place!”
