Point Impossible provides perfect canvas for Old Mal glory

POINT Impossible delivered the kind of conditions longboard surfers dream about on Saturday, as competitors from across Australia converged for the 2026 Victorian Old Mal and Logger Titles.

More than 40 surfers competed in the event, with clean waves providing the perfect canvas for classic noseriding, flowing turns and traditional longboard style.

Newcastle’s Jack Norton stole the show, claiming both the open men’s and under-45 Old Mal titles with polished performances that featured long noserides and smooth carving turns.

Ocean Grove’s Chad McLauchlan finished runner-up in the open men’s division, ahead of Point Lonsdale’s Tim Edwards, Mornington Peninsula surfer Lachie Sandor and Torquay’s Matthew Shay.

Fellow Ocean Grove surfer Melanie Renton-Wright claimed the open women’s title, finishing ahead of Mitsy Igarashi, Kelly Goddard and Jax Goddard after impressing judges with her drop-knee turns and smooth backhand carves.

SOUL Longboard Club president Lachy Fletcher said the conditions and standard of surfing combined to produce one of the event’s best editions.

“Conditions were epic and the level of surfing was truly exceptional from all the guys and girls for the whole day,” Fletcher said.
