AS Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) becomes part of our everyday life, communities across Victoria’s west are discovering how a 10-cent refund can create benefits far beyond the reverse vending machine.

For the Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) Ocean Grove, it’s helping support cleaner oceans while creating unforgettable experiences for people living with disability.

Since 2009, the DSA Ocean Grove has provided free surfing experiences for people living with disability, relying entirely on volunteers and donations to make each event possible.

These days are about more than getting on a board, they’re about inclusion, confidence and joy.

Funds raised through CDS Vic donated funds help DSA Ocean Grove cover the cost of running its two annual events, including food and refreshments for about 220 volunteers, up to 100 surfers and their carers and families.

Donations also support funding for specialist equipment such as beach-accessible wheelchairs, which need regular replacement due to wear from the coastal environment.

Since 2009, the DSA Ocean Grove has provided free surfing experiences for people living with disability, relying entirely on volunteers and donations to make each event possible.

Jeremy Swift, president of DSA Ocean Grove said: “Every donation helps us continue putting Smiles on Dials and making these special surfing days possible for our amazing surfers and their families.”

Tony Catania, west zone network operator TOMRA Cleanaway’s general manager for Victoria, said clean oceans and strong communities go hand in hand.

“Supporting Disabled Surfers Association, Ocean Grove through CDS Vic is a simple way to protect the places we love while helping create more inclusive experiences on the Surf Coast,” he said.

Contributing is easy. Collect your eligible containers and return them at one of the six refund points across the Surf Coast and Armstrong Creek.
