CONSTRUCTION is about to start at a Surf Coast Highway intersection that will improve access to a recent Torquay housing development.

Works at the highway’s intersection with Coombes Road and Rosser Boulevard will include installation of traffic lights, street lights, bicycle lanes, a bus stop and pedestrian links.

Crews will be on site from May 15, with the build expected to last until December.

The project will extend Rosser Boulevard from the Quay 2 development to connect to the feeder road.

Surf Coast Shire mayor Liz Pattison said the long-awaited project would ease traffic at nearby roads and improve safety.

“This important project has been in the pipeline for several years and will improve traffic flow and safety for all road users. It will create a new access point to the Surf Coast Highway, which will help ease the traffic load on Merrijig Drive,” Surf Coast Shire Mayor Cr Liz Pattison said.

“I know many students walk and ride to school along the highway track, so this will also create a signalised crossing point on Coombes Road.”

Surf Coast Highway will remain open but have lane closures at times and the area’s speed limit lowered to 40kmh.

The council project coincided with Barwon Water pipeline works at Coombes Road, with its access to and from the highway closed to all traffic.

Coombes Road will remain closed between Surf Coast Highway and Messmate Road until the end of the year, except for residential and emergency vehicle use.
