VICTORIA Police hosted an event on Sunday that saw people of all abilities come together for a day of fun, connection and inclusivity in Torquay.

The Surf Coast All Abilities Community Day at Elephant Walk was a chance for people with disabilities to connect with local police officers in a safe, supportive environment.

Attendees had the chance to learn about Victoria Police’s new Disability Liaison Officers (DLOs), who aim to build understanding and provide guidance on safety and accessibility, and are trained to understand the issues relevant to the disability community.

DLOs are located across Victoria in every Police Service Area, including at the Torquay and Geelong stations.

Event highlights included a live demonstration by VICSES volunteers, who used the “jaws of life” and other tools to simulate a car rescue; and an appearance by four horses (and their riders) from Victoria Police’s Mounted Branch, which proved popular with the crowd.

“This event is a great way for police and people with disability to come together in a safe and inclusive environment,” Sergeant Ben Korevaar from Torquay Police said.

“We’ve had dozens of our police members involved in the event – including our Disability Liaison Officers – who have been working with our local disability community to help build stronger and meaningful connections.

“We are proud to be involved in the event and hope it increases the community’s awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disabilities.”
