TORQUAY College student DeeDee has been crowned the people’s choice champion of the 2024 Surf Coast Shire Community Calendar competition.

The nine-year-old’s mixed media piece ‘Salty’, captured the attention of the 400 in person and online voters with its vibrant colour and clever use of sea salt and sponges.

Her vibrant artwork was made with paper, salt, food dye, acrylic paint, glue, felt marker and graphite pencil.

As the 13th winner, DeeDee’s piece will grace the cover of the calendar and feature alongside the other 12 earlier winners.

Councillor Gary Allen said DeeDee’s piece was a perfect choice for the cover.

“The artwork is beautiful, and so colourful. For someone in grade three I have no doubt, there are many more artworks in DeeDee’s future.

“All of the pieces entered this year show the diversity found in the Surf Coast, and every year I love seeing how artists capture and express the theme.”

A total of fifty-five local artists entered the calendar competition across the four categories of Child, Youth, 2D and 3D.
