Drinks and nibbles to honour LGBTIQ community

Torquay Community House is gearing up to celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on Friday May 17.

IN HONOUR of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) on Friday May 17, Torquay Community House is hosting an evening of drinks and nibbles to celebrate the LGBTIQ community. IDAHOBIT was launched in 2004 with the aim of supporting LGBTIQ people globally.

Since its inception, IDAHOBIT is a calendar event used to champion inclusion, and to build knowledge and understanding. According to IDAHOBIT, 75 per cent of LGBTIQ youth experience some form of discrimination, while 24.4 per cent of lesbian, gay and bisexual people experience depression. Torquay Community House invites all to attend from 5.30pm.

Wednesday May 15 – Two free workshops – “My Budget” and “The Value and Importance of Friends” are on offer. (See other story this page).

Wednesday May 22 – As part of National Volunteering Week, TCH will be one of five community houses from the Surf Coast to host morning teas for the area at 11am.

Volunteers from organisations around the community are invited to meet other volunteers and network.

Wednesday May 29 – National Reconciliation Week will be commemorated with a light supper and guest lecture on Indigenous languages by guest speaker Corrina Eccles.
