THE reality is, we all have a friend or family member who may be putting on a brave face, but what’s lurking below the surface can be bigger personal issues that need an outlet. There are times we just don’t know what to say or how we can be of help.

So, two local surfers and business operators have teamed up to bring a free event, Tomorrow Architects, to Torquay that is normally only available for AFL clubs, corporate employees and CEOs for a fee.

Surfing Victoria’s Pete Murphy, and real estate business owner Shaun O’Callaghan representing 50-Year Storm in memory of Shaun Brooks, have facilitated this event that aims to assist men to develop skills and awareness so they can learn more, and develop abilities to open up conversations and be better equipped to handle those around them who might be going through tough times.

With the help of The Bolt Blowers, Surfing Victoria and 50-Year Storm, enough money has been raised to bring this event to town for free.

Pete and Shaun said that after having lost one of their best mates and other friends to suicide and knowing that there are too many men quietly suffering, it’s reached a tipping point.

“As a community, we felt that we’ve struggled to know how to help,” they said.

“This event is going to build strength in the community and another step towards supporting our mates and those close to us.

“It’s also an incredible opportunity to grow personally for those who attend and bring solidarity to an issue that is not going away, in fact, it’s getting worse.

“That is why we have invited one of the most legendary guys who has been working across Australia to help guys like us.

“We invite you to join us for Tom Harkin’s program Tomorrow Architects. Tom works with the AFL, Movember and Triple M to name just a few, arming top CEOs and footy players with the practical tools that they can implement in their everyday life.

“Surrounded by likeminded guys, by attending this event you will become better equipped to identify some of the triggers affecting mental health, and gain greater confidence, not only within yourself, but to better handle conversations with friends and family who might be doing it tough.

“We owe it our mates and those close to us, to know how to help.

“This is an event like no other, it’s seriously powerful and one you don’t want to miss, and it’s offered at no cost. “Why? Because we’re sick and tired of watching good men struggle and not know how to help, bring a friend, bring two, or bring 10 and please spread the word.

“This is about showing up with your mates for your mates, no RSVP required, simply turn up, we hope to see you there.”

This is an open invitation to all male members of the community over the age of 25 to attend.

The event will take place 7pm Wednesday April 18 at Torquay Football Club, Spring Creek Reserve, Surf Coast Highway Torquay.
