Free fireworks displays will return to Geelong waterfront this New Year’s Eve, as the City of Greater Geelong helps the local community to say goodbye to 2021 with a bang.

Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said the city had worked hard to make sure the free community event can go ahead during the vital holiday season.

“We’re thrilled to be able to host our free fireworks display and help the community kick-off the New Year on a positive note.

“We know that similar events had to be cancelled in Lorne so we wanted to make sure we could offer entertainment not just for Geelong, but for the entire Surf Coast and Bellarine region.”

The event includes an early 9.30pm fireworks display for children and families and the traditional midnight event.

Both displays will run for eight minutes.

Deputy mayor Trent Sullivan said the fireworks would be safely discharged from a barge on Corio Bay, so anyone with a view of the bay and city skyline will be able to enjoy the display.

“Whether you want to have a gathering at home, enjoy free family entertainment at the beach, or book a table at one of our fabulous restaurants, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this New Year’s Eve.

“Please stay safe, look after your friends and family, and we wish everyone in the Greater Geelong community health and happiness in 2022.”

Revellers are asked to please ensure they adhere to all COVID-safe directions throughout the evening.

Pet owners are urged to keep their pets safe on New Year’s Eve.
