Geelong set for increase in social housing
THE state government announced last week that 13 new social housing dwellings would be constructed in the South Barwon region.
These new dwellings are part of the state government’s Social Housing Growth Fund, which is set to deliver more than 780 social housing residences in Victoria.
The South Barwon dwellings will primarily be based in Grovedale, and will be provided through Salvation Army Housing Victoria, which is eligible for low interest loans as a community housing organisation.
South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman said these dwellings played a crucial role in society.
“This fund is delivering much needed social and affordable housing for Victorians seeking to escape family violence, homelessness and life on the streets, including here in South Barwon.”
Earlier in the year the City of Greater Geelong council endorsed the Social Housing Plan 2020-2041.
The plan noted there were 3,300 households living in social housing in the city, with nearly 11,000 other households in financial stress due to housing costs.
The city’s social inclusion portfolio chair Cr Sarah Mansfield said the plan acknowledged the need for more social housing in the region.
“This strategy highlights that the quantity and quality of social housing in Geelong is calling out for sustained improvement.
“Without major investment, the numbers of people experiencing housing stress will only increase.”
The plan aims to see a further 12,000 houses social housing dwellings in the region by 2041.
