THE Hells Bells Mixed Pairs CrossFit Competition brought a buzz of energy back to Torquay last weekend, returning for its fourth year with a packed two-day program of functional fitness.

The coastal event challenged competitors to complete nine demanding workouts across the weekend, blending strength, endurance and skill-based movements, including a swim at Torquay’s main beach.

Athletes competed alongside their partners across four divisions, which catered for everyone from beginners to more advanced competitors, with some duos travelling from as far as Switzerland to take part.

Event co-organiser Danny Russell said the response had again exceeded expectations, with 91 pairs entering the competition. He said the event’s laid-back atmosphere was a big part of its appeal.

“One of the big things we promote the competition on is all about coastal vibes,” Mr Russell said.

“There’s no prize money, there’s no egos, it’s just all about getting in and having some fun.

“We’ve had athletes from beginners right through to people who have competed at regional and international levels.

“Everyone’s really laid back, really cruisy and has a lot of fun.”

A highlight of the weekend was the presentation of the ‘Spirit of the Games’ award, which this year went to the oldest duo ever to compete at Hells Bells.

“We usually give it out to someone that’s done a really great job or someone who goes above and beyond,” Mr Russell said.

“This year, we had a team called ‘CA132’. I was like, ‘That’s a really random name’, but it wasn’t until our DJ turned to me and told me that was their combined age! The male was 71 and the female was 61 and they didn’t even finish last.

“They were great with everyone; they brought really fun vibes, and everyone got along with them really well.”

With strong feedback flowing in from competitors, Mr Russell said planning was already under way for next year’s event.
