Illuminating winter in Armstrong Creek

ARMSTRONG Creek residents are being called on to help transform their community into a light-filled winter wonderland.
Winter Light Walk is an initiative of the 3217 Community Group and it is hoped locals will join in the fun by decorating their homes with lights during July and August.
Warralily community development officer, Nina Bendon, said the idea was to create a little magic for children to enjoy during the colder months.
Ms Bendon said it was hoped residents would get into the spirit by digging out their Christmas lights and decorating all – or part – of their homes.
“Our group is trying to create a sense of brightness,” Nina said.
“In terms of everything that is going on we know people could be feeling a bit dark and gloomy.
“This is a bit of fun and a way to brighten things up and also something for the kids.”
Warralily resident Mary-Ann Gage came up with the idea of lighting up the neighbourhood.
Mrs Gage, who is originally from Britain, said she felt it was difficult for young children to enjoy the lights at Christmas because it got dark so late.
“In the UK during winter you are in the dark by three in the afternoon,” she said, with a laugh.
“I’ve always felt over here the children have to wait until really late to see the lights because it is Christmas in summer.
“This way, it is dark before bedtime and we thought it would be really nice for families to enjoy a walk around the streets while it is still early in the evening.”
Mrs Gage said she had put lights in her own garden and her neighbours have jumped on board by decorating their balcony.
She said Armstrong Creek was a lovely community to live in and she hoped the Light Up Winter idea would catch on.
“It only has to be something small – a tree in the garden, a letter box or a window display is enough,” she said.
“We are all at home and staying at home so this is a simple way we can brighten up the area and brighten up winter.”
