CREWS have started a construction blitz at Barwon Heads Road that will disrupt busy intersections until mid-next month.

From tomorrow (May 27), Barwon Heads Road will be down to one lane between Breakwater Road and Settlement Road as the northbound lane is shut to allow for intensive works for a duplication project.

The Barwon Heads Road-Breakwater Road intersection will then close from June 17 until July 11, with access maintained from the Breakwater Road bridge to the southern end of Barwon Heads Road.

State road authorities have warned of delays of up to 20 minutes during the three week period of non-stop construction.

The build will raise the road by up to a metre to protect it from flooding from the nearby Barwon River and wetlands.

Another major Geelong project will also progress in coming weeks; water pipes surrounding rail lines to be relocated and upgraded as part of the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds duplication, which will start track work this year.

“We’re delivering the upgrades to regional roads and train lines we promised, supporting hundreds of jobs throughout regional Victoria,” Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allen said.

“We encourage Victorians travelling during this period to plan ahead and we thank them for their patience as we deliver these vital upgrades.”

The road construction is part of the first phase of the Barwon Heads Road upgrade, which will duplicate the road from Settlement Road to Reserve Road, Charlemont, and include intersection upgrades and accompanying shared use paths.

Stage one of the project is set to finish by the end of next year.

Meanwhile, a stage two duplication through to the Lower Duneed Road roundabout also has the go-ahead, after the new Labor federal government committed funding during their election campaign.
