CONSTRUCTION on a new roundabout at the intersection of the Surf Coast Highway, South Beach Road and Messmate Road at North Torquay is now well underway.

South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman said that the roundabout would improve safety at the busy intersection.

“We know that this part of Torquay is growing,” Mr Cheeseman said.

“That’s why we’re investing in this key upgrade to ensure everyone can get home sooner and safer.”

The roundabout will be the first in Victoria to have physical lane separators.

Lane separators are designed to divide traffic on approach to the intersection, preventing people from cutting into other lanes, while also making them reduce their speeds.

The upgrade is also mindful of cyclists, as there will be dedicated bicycle lanes, including bicycle hook turn bays to ensure their safety.

South Beach Road traffic is currently being detoured via Horseshoe Bend Road and Blackgate Road. The Surf Coast Highway will remain open through the roundabout’s construction, but lane closures and reduced speeds will be a necessity.
