Peake seals dramatic Renegades win with match-winning six
GEELONG young gun Oliver Peake produced a moment to remember for the Melbourne Renegades on Wednesday, sealing a dramatic last-ball win against the Perth Scorchers with a towering six.
Playing in enemy territory at Optus Stadium, Peake silenced the home crowd by launching the final delivery over the boundary to secure a four-wicket victory.
After the Renegades dismissed the Scorchers for 127, the chase proved trickier than expected.
A win looked out of reach in the 17th over, when Peake was given out by a soft signal as he was caught by Perth captain Ashton Turner for just 15 runs.
But, much to the dismay of the home crowd, the call was controversially overturned as replays showed the ball had touched the ground as Turner landed for the catch.
With Peake still alive, four runs were required off the final ball as he hit the last of his unbeaten 42 runs with the match-winning six to the chorus of intense booing.
The 19-year-old was given player of the match for his heroics in the Renegades’ second straight win.
“It’s pretty surreal,” he said.
“To do it here in front of all the Scorchers fans is pretty special and what you grow up dreaming of doing.
“I had a bit of luck and [I am] just happy that it all paid off tonight.”
The teenager headed straight from the ground to the airport, departing for Africa to captain Australia at the under-19 World Cup.
Fellow Geelong local Callum Stow also featured in the clash, bowling two overs of spin in the first innings.
