THE Revitalising Central Geelong Partnership is asking the community to consider reducing Geelong’s dependency on cars and imagining a bustling city precinct with less noise, pollution and stress.

Residents, commuters, traders, shoppers and business owners can have their say on transport and parking options in central Geelong via an online survey, which is open until March 29.

As Australia’s fastest growing regional city, the City of Greater Geelong, in partnership with the state government, is looking to canvass as many views as possible on how to build a modern and dynamic parking and transport infrastructure that will support this growth and provide opportunities to enhance local amenity.

The city has released a Car Parking Discussion Paper as well as a video that pitches an aspirational future for Geelong modelled on cities such as Madrid, Helsinki, London and Paris, which have embraced a global trend to reduce car dependency.

Community members will also have the chance to provide their feedback at a number of locations and events throughout the greater Geelong region.

Following the 100-day consultation period, the city will review public feedback and develop a draft Central Geelong Car Parking Strategy, which will be released for further public consultation in 2019.

“This consultation is not just about car parks. Fundamentally what we are asking the community is how they want to see central Geelong grow and evolve into the future, and how parking and transport will fit in with that vision,” Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood said.

“A clever and creative Geelong needs clever and creative solutions to support the rapid growth of our city.

“Tell us your most aspirational and creative parking and transport ideas and help us shape the future of Geelong.”
