THE Geelong branch of the Ukrainian Women’s Association has thanked local businesses for their ongoing support, presenting them with special handwritten cards in the lead-up to Christmas.

Torquay local and Ukrainian woman Larissa Sichivitsa, who fled Ukraine in 2022 following the outbreak of war, personally delivered the cards last week to businesses along Gilbert Street.

The Christmas cards were donated by the Museum of Ukrainian Culture and History, and messages have been written on each card by Geelong branch president,Valya Bazalicki.

Ms Sichivitsa said the gesture was a heartfelt way to acknowledge the many small but meaningful acts of support shown by the community.

“We have been giving these out to thank them for helping us in any way. Not with money, but with their voice and their smiles,” she said.

“I love when you go around Torquay and see you see everyone smiling at you. If they don’t smile they are tourists. Torquay people always say good morning and smile.

“I never thought we had so many businesses here, but we’ve delivered to about 30.”
