Solar boats set sail again

April 4, 2018 BY

PUPILS harnessed the power of the sun and went sailing last week, testing their design skills in the second Solar Cup Educational Challenge.

Organised by the Surf Coast Energy Group (SCEG) and held at Bellbrae Primary School, the grade 5 and 6 pupils from the Bellbrae and Winchelsea primary schools formed teams to build a solar-powered boat no larger than an A4 piece of paper that needed to travel along a 10-metre course.

SCEG said the teams were all great sports with lots of energy, and congratulated the all-girls team of Rubber Duckies for taking first place.

As well as the teachers and schools involved, SCEG also thanked the event’s sponsors: Surf Coast Shire, Bendigo Bank, and Bunnings Warehouse.

“Lastly, we would like to thank the volunteers from the Victorian Model Solar Vehicle Challenge who helped prepare the schools for the event.

“We look forward to making the rounds through all the schools in the Surf Coast in the future.”
