St Joseph’s, Highton Durran win BWCC flags

THE Barwon Women’s Cricket Competition (BWCC) wrapped up its 2023 season at the weekend, staging its last two grand finals and crowning its last two premiers.

Winter Reserve hosted the A Grade grand final between North Geelong and St Joseph’s on Sunday, with Joeys winnng the toss and electing to bat.

St Joseph’s compiled 125 runs for the loss of four wickets over its 20 overs, opener Caitlin Burnett carrying the bat with 51 retired not out. Skipper Liz Tubb’s 29 also pushed up the total.

North Geelong started its chase badly, losing opener Chloe Smith to a run out for a duck and seeing most of its batters dismissed cheaply, Caitlin Wight top scoring with 25.

In the end, the Magpies ran out of overs and time, finishing at 6/100 and leaving St Josephs as the victors.

In the B Grade grand final, held on the neighbouring oval at the same venue, Lethbridge won the toss and sent in Highton Durran, who put together 8/84 off 20 overs, opener and captain Jane Burch the best with 34.

Only Georgie Connors (13) could break into double figures for Lethbridge as Highton Durran restricted the reply to just 52, three wickets each from Jazmyn Newton and Katie Castle paving rhe way to the flag.

The BWCC will hold its presentation night at the Portarlington Cricket Club, 4-22 Sproat Street, Portarlington on Friday, March 17 from 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
