Student success with Xero

April 26, 2024 BY

The Gordon student Angelique Moodie was taught how to use Xero software, contributing to her success in securing a job as a junior accountant.

AT 18 years old Angelique Moodie landed her first job as a junior accountant using her Xero software skills.

Ms Moodie left school at the end of year 11 and discovered at The Gordon she could learn real skills needed to get ahead in her career.

The accounting student is also a small business owner and has been able to use the skills she learnt at The Gordon to compliment her two fashion businesses, Citrine and lemon, and Y2K Mum.

“I wanted to get ahead and further my studies after high school,” Ms Moodie said.

“I chose to study a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping as I knew it would help equip me with life-long skills I could apply within my own businesses and set me up for success.”

The Gordon is one of the few institutions that includes Xero as part of their training, with the software being one of the main reasons Ms Moodie secured her job at the accounting firm.

Ms Moodie said her training on Xero had been so important, with an increasing number of businesses using the program.

“It’s now a key part of my daily accounting practices at McHenry Partners and within my own businesses. I can’t emphasise enough how important this training was.

“My accounting course as a whole was a significant help in regard to understanding my responsibilities as a business owner.”

Ms Moodie recently won the Business and Technology category award at The Gordon Awards for Excellence night.

Alana Spence is Ms Moodie’s teacher and said she has been dedicated to study from the beginning.

“She immediately demonstrated a keen interest in business and has used the skills she has learnt to continue running her small business on the side,” Ms Spence said.

“It’s incredible to see that while Angie hasn’t finished her course yet, she has been able to gain employment as a junior accountant.”

Ms Moodie’s future goal is to become a chartered accountant and will complete further studies in accounting this year.

The Gordon is holding an information session on Tuesday May 7 from 5pm for those wanting to learn more about a career in accounting or bookkeeping.
