Taking strides in regional improvement

December 21, 2017 BY

AN EXTENSION of the Surf Coast Walk to Lorne to enable dual use by cyclists and walkers from start to finish is one of three applications by the Surf Coast Shire to the federal government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

The shire is seeking $100,000 for its Growing Adventure Tourism Surf Coast Trails, along with $360,500 for the Banyul-Warri Fields Yuurrock soccer pitch and lighting and $5 million for the Surf Coast Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium (as mentioned in last week’s edition).

Cr Margot Smith said she was particularly excited about the Surf Coast Trails project, to which the shire would contribute $100,000.

“The $200,000 would enable the development of a plan to extend the Surf Coast Walk from Fairhaven to Cumberland River near Lorne.

“We would also be able to develop a plan for cyclists and walkers to both use the entire trail, and review the current management model of the Surf Coast Walk.”

The council’s allocation of funds to the walk follows the success of the Point Impossible to Fairhaven section and its significance as a G21 priority project.

“The Surf Coast Walk is a world-class attraction and a key part of the Victorian trail industry. Trails are one of the state’s largest tourist attractors as more people are seeking outdoor adventures,” Cr Smith said.

“We want the G21 region to be Victoria’s premier trail destination for walkers, runners, cyclists and mountain bikers of all abilities.”

The Yuurrock soccer project at Banyul-Warri Fields includes the development of a third pitch, featuring a drainage system, lighting, natural turf coverage, and fully enclosed chain mesh fencing with high areas behind both goals. A third pitch in the precinct would also support growth in soccer for both males and females.

The Surf Coast Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium is a key project in the shire’s civic and community precinct masterplan, and will increase participation in physical activity by delivering an indoor court facility with space for group fitness and various sports including basketball, netball, volleyball, badminton and futsal. It will also be a valued community space capable of hosting events such as concerts, indoor markets and workshops.
