The Gordon launches renewable energy pathway

THE Gordon is helping power the region’s clean energy future, announcing an innovative new course set to launch in 2027 that will give secondary students a direct pathway into one of Australia’s fastest-growing industries.

The Certificate II in Renewable Energy Technologies and Application (22696VIC) will be delivered through the VET Delivered to School Students (VETDSS) program, combining classroom learning with practical, hands-on experience at TAFE.

Designed specifically for students starting year 10 or 11 in 2027, this two-year program will immerse participants in the rapidly evolving world of renewable energy, equipping them with the foundational skills needed to thrive in a clean economy.

At the heart of the course is The Gordon’s new purpose-built Renewable Energy Hub at its East Geelong Campus.

This state-of-the-art facility has been designed to provide an immersive training environment, giving students exposure to the latest technologies and industry practices.

Director of industry, trades and environment Andy Bugeja said the initiative represents a major step forward for the region.

“This project is about building the workforce of tomorrow and ensuring our region is ready for the transition to clean energy,” Bugeja said.

“We’re excited to welcome our first group of students in Geelong and Werribee in 2027 and support them in exploring meaningful careers in a growing industry.”

The Gordon is the first TAFE in Victoria to pilot this course, reinforcing its leadership in clean technology education.

 

Bugeja said the course had been developed in response to strong industry demand.

“Renewable energy is one of the fastest-growing industries in our region and across the country,” he said.

“This course provides students with early exposure to the technologies shaping our future and prepares them with practical, job-ready skills.”

Delivered one afternoon per week, the program is highly project-driven, allowing students to engage with real-world applications of renewable technologies.

From understanding solar and emerging energy systems to exploring their role in reducing emissions, students will gain valuable insights into the transition to a sustainable future.

Importantly, the course creates clear pathways beyond school, whether into apprenticeships, employment or further study at TAFE or university.

Applications for all 2027 VETDSS courses at The Gordon, including this new offering, open on Thursday 6 August.
