The Sands recognised for delivery of lifesaving water safety program

A TORQUAY swim school has been recognised for its potentially lifesaving work after being named a finalist for Life Saving Victoria’s Swim and Survive Partner of the Year award.

The Sands is the only Swim and Survive partner school in Torquay, with programs focused on swimming, personal survival, basic rescue and lifesaving skills.

Up to 600 children progress through the program each year, with Health Club manager Valentina Gamarra saying strong water safety skills are essential for coastal children.

“A lot of our students participate in Surf Life Saving clubs during the summer. They surf, they’re in at the beach year-round and have pools at their own houses, it’s so important to give them these skills for life,” Gamarra said.

Creating a fun learning environment is central to the program, with Gamarra saying the team works closely with parents and swim teachers to ensure students find the right fit.

 

She said The Sands’ swim teachers bring a wide range of experience and backgrounds.

“Some of the teachers, they’ve been with us for three years and started their careers with us, while others come from 20–25 years’ experience,” Gamarra said.

“We are so lucky to have a great team that live locally and they just love to work with the kids.”

The Sands is one of four finalists for Swim and Survive Partner of the Year. Gamarra said the recognition reflects the work of her team, led by swim school coordinator Vanessa Nath.

“Just being nominated is a massive achievement,” Gamarra said.

“We know that we are very unique and the way we work is very different from other schools, especially as we share the pool with other members of the health club.

“Everyone works together in a very friendly environment and we all understand the different needs of one another.”

The Life Saving Victoria Awards of Excellence will be held in Melbourne on Saturday 15 August.
