NEW sponsors and life members were welcomed to the Torquay Tigers last weekend, the club’s first event of its kind in a pandemic-interrupted few years.

Steve Cooper, Meagan Mifsud and Michael Grossman were all awarded life memberships for their years of service to the Football, Netball and Cricket club.

Tigers football president Jenny Wood said that although the club did lose a few sponsors in recent years, some of which had closed, another 19 new sponsors had signed up.

“It’s the biggest members and sponsors day in years,” Ms Wood said of the event attended by more than 120 people.

“It’s really important for them to come back and spend some time here, get to see everyone again.

“It’s about reconnecting the community, meeting sponsors, seeing what the club can do, has on offer and show them where their money is going.”

Ms Wood said it was also an important refresh after the cutting short of last year’s football finals season that had a big impact on the club.

“It’s a bit of a reset, we’re back ready to get started again, but the hangover of 2021 where we got cut off at finals that we know we would’ve won is still with us.

“Same for kids footy, for many it would have been their first final … we underestimate how much impact that had on the juniors.

“We’re just hoping we get through this year without a hitch.”
