The next Tim Gates Classic Fun Run/Walk will be held at Fairhaven beach on Sunday, with more than 700 enthusiastic people from all ages and abilities expected to take part.

The annual community event involves a 5km walk or run and a 10km run.

The Tim Gates Classic raises funds for the Tim Gates Foundation, which was established in memory of Fairhaven SLSC member Tim Gates, who touched the lives of so many people through his dedication to surf lifesaving and the Club. In 2008, “Gatesy” tragically died in a surfing accident at Fairhaven beach. The 2019 run will mark 11 years since his death and the eighth consecutive Tim Gates Classic.

Gatesy was a passionate and proud member of the Fairhaven SLSC. He devoted countless volunteer hours in the training and development of young surf lifesavers so that they could further their skills in competition, leadership and learning in the surf lifesaving movement.

The Tim Gates Foundation raises and administers funds to support young surf lifesavers to learn, further their skills, assist the community in aquatic safety and compete in the surf and on the beach.

The Tim Gates Classic Fun Run contributes to this cause. Funds from previous years have supported the redevelopment of the new Fairhaven SLSC clubhouse, provided equipment for Nippers, and facilitated youth training programs.

Entry for the run is $40 for adults, $20 for children under 15 years, and $100 for a family of four. Entries are limited, so participants are encouraged to register online no later than the day before the run.

The race briefing for competitors will be held at 4.15pm at the Fairhaven SLSC, with the run beginning at 4.30pm.
