ONE of the most important contributors to a person’s wellbeing, particularly during COVID-19, is physical activity, and a local RSL is saying “you’re never too old to get moving”.

Torquay RSL is encouraging Veterans and Emergency Services members to get moving during Veterans’ Health Week this month.

“Get moving through physical activity is the focus of this year’s Veterans’ Health Week running from October 16 to October 24,” Torquay RSL president Bob Tyler said.

Torquay RSL is offering a range of events to encourage veterans, the ex-service community and emergency service personnel to get involved.

“Getting moving is one of the most important aspects of maintaining overall health and wellbeing,” Mr Tyler said.

Mr Tyler maintains his level of fitness with daily walks and regular exercises declares physical activity strengthens his mental wellness.

“Physical activity sessions in controlled groups, whether they be walking, Yoga, Tai Chi, gym activity or sport, not only gets us moving, but they provide a great opportunity to meet other veterans and their families.

“We know from research sources that physical activity and social interaction combine to improve veterans’ mental health and overall wellbeing.”

Mr Tyler said events were scheduled across Torquay, and all events would adhere to COVIDSafe policies.

The Torquay RSL has organised Tai Chi for one hour both in the morning and afternoon (11am and 2pm) on Wednesday, October 20 on the lawn area at the side of Bowls Club for Veterans and Victoria Police members only.

“A walk to Point Danger from Elephant Walk will also be held on October 22 from 12 noon. At the end of the walk, we plan to have a socially distanced BBQ where everyone is welcome,” Mr Tyler said.

“Guided by Exercise Physiologists some of our members exercise up to three times a week as well as exercising at home or going for walks.

“They are happy to chat with veterans and their families about programs targeted to assist veterans with DVA accepted conditions.”

Those who are interested can head to the Torquay RSL Facebook page for information about the times of the activities, any changes to the planned events, or any other activities the RSL may be able to add to their schedule.

Torquay RSL Wellbeing Advocates and Support Officers will be on hand to answer any questions veterans may have about the support services available to them.

For more information, or to check on any activity changes to sites and times, call the Torquay RSL office on 0409 297 441 or email [email protected].
