Why Geelong’s new co-captains are the perfect pair

When Nina Morrison and Becky Webster first walked through the doors of the Geelong Football Club in 2019, there was no women’s history for them to reflect on.

Drafted at picks one and seven respectively ahead of the Cats’ inaugural season, they stared down careers on a blank page.

Eight seasons later, they have become two of the club’s defining figures and, most recently, its 2026 co-captains.

For Morrison and Webster, the shared appointment feels fitting after spending their AFLW journeys side by side.

Webster said having Morrison alongside her eased the burden of leadership, knowing the captaincy does not sit solely on her shoulders.

Confident their different strengths will complement one another, she said there was no one she would rather share the role with.

“Nina’s just a f***ing work horse,” Webster said.

“You’ve seen that throughout her young days as well; she really brings that standard of physicality on the track and her wisdom around what the game is going to bring has been really great for the group.”

Morrison, meanwhile, said Webster brought plenty of energy to the role, including the all important “vibes”.

“[Becky] is a bit louder than I am,” she said.

“I can be a bit head down, bum up sometimes and then Becky gets the vibes going and brings everyone along with that.

“I think we should complement each other well.”

After learning of their appointments alongside the playing group last week, Webster said she had taken time to reflect on her journey at the club.

Now among Geelong’s most experienced AFLW players, she said it still felt like yesterday that she and Morrison arrived together.

“We just want what’s best for the group but also this footy club,” Webster said.

“I’ve been so privileged to walk into these four walls and feel like home. [I want] to share that amongst the group as well and to continue being unmistakably Geelong.”

A lifelong Cats supporter, Morrison said it was surreal to walk the halls of the club as both a player and leader.

The significance hits hardest when the stands are empty and the crowds have gone home.

“It’s crazy that you can walk through here, not just on training days, but randomly on a weekend or a time when no one else is really here and it’s a place that I just get to walk through,” Morrison said.

“It’s really cool to think that I’ve grown up here. A lot of my leadership has obviously developed here as well.

“Hopefully we can continue to evolve in that sense and create something special.”

The Geelong Cats will open their season against reigning premiers North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium in a double header alongside the clubs’ men’s teams. The date of the clash is still to be announced.
