Winter Classic to support local family in need

THE Surf Coast Longboarders Club will rally behind a local family at this year’s Winter Classic, with organisers hoping to eclipse the event’s previous fundraising efforts.

This year’s event will support local mother Alex Mackenzie and her two young children following the death of her husband Sean Andrews this year.

Andrews was a much-loved member of the local surfing community who worked at Patagonia’s Torquay headquarters.

 

Proceeds from event entries, raffle prizes and the charity auction will go directly to the family.

Surf Coast Longboarders president Penny Andrews said the club selected a different beneficiary each year, but supporting the Mackenzie-Andrews family was an easy decision.

“Sean was a big part of the surf scene and many of our club members were good mates with him,” Andrews said.

“Ali was pregnant with her second child when Sean passed; absolutely tragic. Any funds raised will go a long way in helping them out.”

More than 40 local businesses have donated prizes for the charity auction, which will be held at the Torquay Angling Club on 8 August.

The Winter Classic surfing competition will be held at Point Impossible on 8 and 9 August.
