CONSTRUCTION is continuing at the Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre in Torquay, with the facility undergoing crucial testing as it comes together.

The aquatic centre’s 25m pool, warm water program pool and in-built spa have all been filled and tested for leaks and structural integrity.

A behind-the-scenes look at the facility last week revealed the facility’s first floor has been constructed, the steel framework for the pool halls has been built, and roof installation has begun.

Surf Coast Shire mayor Mike Bodsworth celebrated the project’s progress.

“I’m so excited to see the Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre shaping up and to get a feel for what a wonderful community asset it will be,” he said.

“We look forward to it becoming a much-loved destination bringing health and wellbeing benefits for people of all ages and abilities from across our shire.”

Stage one of the build includes a 25m indoor pool for lap/squad swimmers, warm water indoor pool, gym, allied heath suites, café and supporting amenities.

Stage two will include a dedicated indoor learn-to-swim pool, indoor splash park, spa, sauna and steam rooms and more change rooms.

Stage one and two of the project are expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and will include a 25m indoor pool, gym and indoor splash park.

The first stage of the project is being funded by the federal Government, the Victorian Government and the Surf Coast Shire council. Stage two is fully funded by the Victorian Government.

Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said the project has been shaped by the community’s vision for a modern, accessible space that supports health and wellbeing.

“This milestone brings us another step closer to opening the doors of a world-class facility.

“Just 15 minutes from Armstrong Creek, families will be able to enjoy new pools, a splash park, spa, sauna and more.

“I’m proud to be part of a government investing in spaces that keep our communities active, connected and supported close to home.”

Corangamite federal member Libby Coker said the project is the result of years of passionate community advocacy.

“This centre will deliver so many benefits for our Surf Coast community — from swimming and fitness to therapy and recreation — and I’m proud the Albanese Government is helping make it happen.”

Both stage one and two are scheduled for completion in late 2026.
