Australia’s best wary of Torquay ahead of battle

February 15, 2018 BY

HEADING to Newcastle are 24 boardriders clubs for this weekend’s nudie Australian Boardriders Battle National Final, competing for a slice of the $82,000 prize pool. One of those clubs is Torquay.

Having been given the wildcard spot for Victoria, Torquay is headed to the ABB for its third showing in five years.

This year club president and open surfer Cahill Bell Warren is confident the squad is ready to take on Australia’s best clubs.

“I am really proud of the list of surfers we have lined up to represent TBC this weekend.

“We have former WCT surfer Nic Muscroft as our O/35 surfer, two Australian Junior Champions in Xavier Huxtable and India Robinson, as well as six open surfers with their own strengths to choose from.

“The culture we have today means that everyone wants what is best for the club, on the day those best suited to the conditions and the task at hand will be selected to pull on a jersey and go hard.”

Torquay has a rich history of team surfing having won the last eight consecutive Victorian Team Titles, as well as all of the Junior Victorian Teams Titles since their inception in 2016.

“The ABB is an event we have really put a lot of effort into in the past few years, we are really focused on setting ourselves up for a big push on a national level,” Bell-Warren said.

“We know our history in our home state and are proud of what we have accomplished in recent years, now we really want to let Australia know who we are and what we stand for.”

The ABB will telecast live on Foxtel across the whole weekend and live on free to air TV on Sunday for finals day.

So make sure you tune in to cheer on the boys and girls representing Torquay!
