THE Surfcoast Basketball Association has named its representative teams for the 2021 season.

Six teams across under-16, 14 and 12s for boys and girls were selected this month with three of the teams set to tackle state-wide tournaments as well as competing in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL), while the other three will solely focus on the VJBL.

Surfcoast Basketball Association president David Scott said the efforts displayed during the tryouts were outstanding and reflected what the Chargers were all about.

“The criteria was your attitude, their team-play and their basketball skills. Those three things in keeping with the association’s values,” Scott said.

“To see the efforts they put in and the way they do it, you can’t help but be proud. The kids are out there having fun, but at the same time they’re doing it in a manner that really reflects those core values. There’s plenty of enjoyment and of course respect for the coaches and the selectors and it was very inclusive.”

The first of three grading games for the VJBL will take place on January 22.

Scott said a big focus this year was extending the squad side in order to provide more opportunity to their basketballers. This year will see around 70 basketballers involved in the rep program, with training squads inclusive of this.

“We’ll have teams of 10 and then on top of that we have a training squad… so it’s a really inclusive squad. We’ve introduced that this year so we’re being a bit more inclusive and if there’s any unavailability there’s every opportunity if the kids in the training squad show the coaches that they can get a game in the playing team, they will.”
