SURF Coast FC has bolstered its forward half with a new signing ahead of its Round 2 clash at home against Bell Park Soccer Club tomorrow (Saturday, April 6) afternoon.

The club announced shortly before the Easter break it had acquired the signature of attacker Luka Jurkovic, the younger brother of existing player Kreso Jurkovic.

Surf Coast FC senior head coach Denis Holtgrefe said the team was super excited to welcome Luka Jurkovic to the fold.

“He comes with a wealth of National Premier League (NPL), but he hasn’t really played much in the last two years but boasts experience at the North Geelong Warriors and the like.

“He hasn’t lately been a Starting XI player, mainly due to a bunch of injuries, but our job will be to get him back to where he was from a physical standpoint and back to his best.”

Jurkovic’s signing comes at an opportune time, following the team’s 2-0 Round 1 win over Balmoral a fortnight ago to begin its State League 4 West season.

Holtgrefe characterised his side’s performance as a “mature” one.

“To be able to win in attack and defence last year was something we prided ourselves on and showed during our last game.

“That goes back to our maturity and composure, which was outstanding and certainly a great way to kick off the season for us.”

Bell Park arrives at Banyul Warri Field with the opposite kind of momentum, failing to score and ultimately being defeated by Moonee Ponds 0-2 in Round 1, but Holtgrefe is not reading into it too much.

“We don’t really know too much about Bell Park other than having seen them in the Geelong Community Pre-Season Cup, a lot of teams don’t tend to give away too much,” he said.

“We’re curious to see what they look like, we know they’ve added a lot of youth to their side and they are fairly fit from a stamina point of view.

“We’re excited but we want to focus on us and the brand of football we want to create.”

Surf Coast FC and Bell Park SC kick off in Torquay at 5pm.
