THE first Festival of Sport has been hailed as a resounding success, with as many as 14,000 people flocking to the Kardinia Park precinct for a weekend of free activities and fun.

The event, held across almost all of the 22 hectares of the precinct – including all three ovals and the Kardinia Aquatic Centre – featured more than 30 sports clinics, stadium tours, and “come and try” events.

The Festival of Sport was a partnership between the state government, the City of Greater Geelong and the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, and trust chief executive officer Michael Brown said on Sunday that the event had exceeded all expectations.

“For a first effort, I couldn’t be more thrilled.

“Amazing days, weather-wise; but we’re just thrilled with the community attendance. We’re stacking bags like there’s no tomorrow.

“All these people who have come together, they’re all part of the Geelong community, and there’s so many sports here.”
