New safety camera boss appointed

April 14, 2016 BY

RETIRED solicitor John Voyage has been appointed as Victoria’s new Road Safety Camera Commissioner.
The commissioner provides independent of oversight Victoria’s camera network, including red-light, mobile and fixed cameras, to ensure that the system is accurate and contributes to safer roads. One of the functions of the role is to carry out annual reviews and assessments of the information made available to the public by the Department of Justice, and the commissioner also gives Victorian motorists an alternate avenue for complaints and quality assurance. Mr Voyage was part of the Law Institute of Victoria’s Road Safety Committee for many years, chaired the Law Institute’s Transport Accident Committee for 20 years, and has contributed to a number of Victorian Parliamentary Road Safety Committee inquiries during his legal career of more than 30 years.
He holds a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws from Monash University and was a partner at Maurice Blackburn from 1990 until 2014.
The appointment follows the retirement of Gordon Lewis, Victoria’s first Road Safety Camera Commissioner, in February.
The state government announced Mr Voyage’s appointment on his first day in the job, on April 6.
“Mr Voyage’s extensive legal experience and passion for road safety makes him an ideal choice and I am confident he will serve Victorians well in his new role,” Acting Police Minister Robin Scott said.
“The Road Safety Commissioner is an advocate for the community and provides a strong oversight of Victoria’s camera system to ensure they continue to play an important role in road safety.
“Speed and red light cameras are powerful tools to help keep motorists and pedestrians safe on our roads.”
