THE Surf Coast Sharks opened their 2026 Victorian AFL Masters home campaign at Bob Pettitt Reserve last weekend, hosting Gisborne in a day that balanced competition with reflection.

Across the over-35 and over-45 grades, the Sharks brought strong pressure and quick ball movement, but the tone was set before the game began.

Both teams observed a minute’s silence to honour the lives of playing coach Luke Vassallo’s father and player Billy Rogers’ mother.

The two matches were played in great spirit, displaying a healthy combination of competitiveness and social connection.

Player and board member Nick Abbott embraced the moment alongside the Sharks.

“We paused for a minute’s silence before the game, and then we played in a really competitive game in the right spirit,” he said.

“Both teams were keen to win, but then we celebrated long into the night together. Most of the Gisborne boys stayed down and had a beer with us.”

The over-45 side featured a combination of elite and local level talent, with former Geelong player and current assistant coach James Rahilly suiting up in the match.

The Sharks now shift focus to their next outing, with both sides set to face Ballarat at Russell Square on 3 May.
