AS grassroots football and netball participation and engagement continues to surge across the Barwon region, AFL Barwon stands as a powerful example of how community sport evolves when driven by committed, diverse leadership.
Central to this transformation is a remarkable group of women, each bringing their own unique experience, passion and vision to the organisation.
From governance and culture through to the day-to-day delivery of football and netball competitions, these leaders are shaping how local sport is structured, managed and delivered across the Barwon region.
At the helm is Kate Patterson, recently appointed as AFL Barwon’s inaugural chief executive.
With more than two decades of experience across sport, government and community sectors, Kate brings strong strategic capability, commercial and governance expertise to the role.
Her background includes senior leadership positions within national sporting bodies and experience navigating complex organisational growth and reform.
As CEO, Kate leads the strategic vision of AFL Barwon, guiding governance and innovation, driving operational excellence and ensuring long-term sustainability across both football and netball.
Her appointment reflects the organisation’s commitment to progressive leadership and strong community connection.
Lisa Patterson is the region general manager for Barwon, where her leadership plays a central role in shaping strategy and driving the growth and sustainability of clubs across the region.
Her journey into community sport administration is underpinned by strong business and organisational expertise, which she has seamlessly translated into a dynamic and evolving sporting landscape.
Lisa oversees stakeholder engagement, club support and regional development initiatives, ensuring clubs are equipped to succeed both on and off the field. Her steady leadership, deep relationships throughout the Barwon community and ability to convert strategic priorities into meaningful, practical outcomes make her instrumental in helping AFL Barwon clubs not only operate effectively but truly flourish.
On the football front, Sarah Naylor brings both grassroots and governance experience.
Prior to her current role as head of football, Sarah served in executive positions at local club level and was actively involved within AFL Barwon’s broader football network.
With a background in sports management and a deep understanding of community club environments, Sarah plays a vital role in overseeing competition management, football operations, player pathways and club development.
Her leadership ensures that football across the region remains inclusive, competitive and aligned with best-practice governance.
Leading netball operations is Sophie Allison, whose focus on participation and development has strengthened the standing of netball across the region.
Since 2021, the sport has experienced significant growth in player numbers and club participation, a rise that has required strong, strategic leadership to manage effectively.
Sophie works closely with clubs and volunteers to enhance competition structures, support umpire and coach development, and ensure pathways are clear for players at all levels.
In a region where netball plays a key role in community identity, her leadership ensures the sport continues to grow sustainably alongside football as a core pillar of AFL Barwon’s offering.
Behind the scenes, Sharon Skene, finance manager at AFL Barwon, provides the financial stewardship that underpins all strategic ambitions. Her expertise in financial management, compliance and governance ensures the organisation operates responsibly and sustainably.
In community sport, where resources must be carefully managed, Sharon’s role is critical in maintaining transparency and long-term stability.
