Ideas aplenty at library philosophy gatherings

IF you’ve ever mused on life’s bigger questions, an event at Ballan Library this Saturday 27 June may be full of like-minded people.
Led by Bacchus Marsh Philosophy Club, the free session will have a focus on values and what matters most in life.
Club founder Andy Vaszolyi will be the facilitator of the meeting and expects some great conversations, if prior events in the last two years are anything to go by.
He said tomorrow’s program will be sure to generate thoughtful discussion.
“We started in April 2024 and we’ve slowly grown,” said Vaszolyi.
“We usually get 12 to 15 people attending but we’ve had up to 25 at a time. It’s relatively popular. We have always got a good topic.
“I happen to think talking about life’s big questions and thinking critically with other people is a lot of fun. It’s also liberating for people.”
Looking ahead, two Saturday sessions each month are scheduled to be held in the Bacchus Marsh Library all the way through to November.
Another is scheduled for the Ballan Library in December as well.
“No philosophy experience is required. Just bring your perspective and your curiosity,” Vaszolyi said.
A secondary school teacher by profession, he said people of all ages have increasingly been rolling up for the Saturday library sessions that run from 10am to 1pm with topics for discussion put forward by attendees.
Topics ahead include Attention, Information and the AI Age, Work, Security and The Future, and Relationships, Consumption and The Good Life.
“It is for all ages and although we do tend to skew a bit more to people in their 50s and 60s, we have had people as young as teens,” Vaszolyi said.
“We have a lot of rusted-on regulars and new people popping up. It’s always hard to finish on time. People don’t want to stop.”
