Critical incident investigation underway after man dies following cross-border police pursuit

A critical incident investigation is underway after a man died following a cross-border police pursuit that ended in the Tweed hinterland on Sunday morning.

NSW Police said officers were alerted about 1am on Sunday, July 19, after the Queensland Police Service reported that a man armed with a firearm had driven across the border into New South Wales following a pursuit.

Police said they commenced a search of the area before locating the man driving a Ford utility on Sexton Hill Drive at Banora Point and directing him to stop.

When he allegedly failed to comply, officers initiated a pursuit.

According to police, the pursuit continued through multiple nearby suburbs before road spikes were successfully deployed against the Ford twice in South Murwillumbah.

Police said the man continued to drive despite the road spikes before finally stopping down an embankment on Kyogle Road at Kunghur, about 26km south-west of Murwillumbah, at about 2am.

Officers established a perimeter around the vehicle before police negotiators were deployed to negotiate with the man.

However, NSW Police said the driver was found unconscious when officers approached the vehicle.

Officers immediately commenced CPR, but the man died at the scene.

According to NSW Police, he has not been formally identified but is believed to be a 25-year-old Queensland man.

Police said a firearm was seized from the vehicle for forensic examination.

A crime scene was established and a critical incident team from Richmond Police District is leading an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the information of the NSW Coroner.

The investigation will be independently reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
