Live events continue to drive Geelong’s cultural growth
WHETHER it’s the buzz of a packed music venue, a bustling food festival or the excitement of a gala ball, live events do so much more than just entertain.
They bring our community together and showcase everything that makes Greater Geelong such a vibrant place to live.
As the council’s Arts & Culture, Hospitality & Live Entertainment chair, I’m delighted to say that our events calendar has never been stronger.
From local musicians performing in intimate venues to immersive arts experiences, community festivals and major conferences, these events create opportunities for people to connect while supporting local businesses and the broader visitor economy.
Live music is woven into Geelong’s identity.
Some of Australia’s most celebrated artists, from Goanna and Chrissy Amphlett to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, can trace their roots to our city.
That legacy continues today through the talented performers, venues, promoters and volunteers who keep our local music scene thriving.
When venues are filled, our streets become more active, restaurants and bars benefit from increased patronage, and people feel encouraged to spend time in the heart of our city.
That’s why we’re committed to practical initiatives such as the Live Music Locator pilot, making it easier for residents and visitors to discover local gigs and support the artists and venues that are the pulse of our creative community.
Recently, I was thrilled to attend our Artists & Creatives Industry Panel and witness firsthand creatives and industry leaders sharing ideas, building networks and strengthening their career pathways.
When creative people support one another, the entire sector becomes stronger, creating lasting benefits for our community.
Our commitment to creativity extends across the region too, through a diverse calendar of events celebrating local talent and showcasing Greater Geelong to new audiences.
Tastes of Greater Geelong continues to highlight the incredible food, wine and hospitality our region is renowned for, while Eclipse: In Bloom is transforming the Geelong Botanic Gardens into a magical after-dark experience.
I attended the opening night and was mesmerised by the spectacular light show. What a wonderful way to make the most of those cold winter nights with the family!
Together, these events encourage people to explore our city and experience Greater Geelong in new ways.
And the next exciting chapter in Geelong’s events story has begun with the opening of Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre.
Already attracting major conferences and exhibitions, the venue is set to elevate our city onto the national stage and unlock significant economic opportunities for years to come.
I was thrilled to join more than 1,000 guests at this landmark venue recently for the Barwon Health Foundation Gala Ball, which raised over $10 million for the Barwon Women’s and Children’s Appeal.
Raising such an incredible amount for the health of our community was a fitting beginning for this venue, designed to host events of national significance while delivering lasting benefits for our region.
From grassroots gigs to world-class conventions, live events help define who we are as a community, strengthening our economy, celebrating our creativity and bringing people together in ways few other experiences can.
As Greater Geelong grows, we will continue investing in entertainment, culture and events to ensure our city remains a place where creativity thrives and where people always have a reason to come together.
